Fortifying: When Flow Becomes Structure

Now, more than ever, many people are feeling the tug of creativity, and it shows through the abundance of content created online each day. Being creative and expressive is an excellent way to navigate the times we are in collectively. It is symbolic participation—a natural human flow that presents in phases. What do I mean by that?

Phases of creativity are best understood as a cycle—a living rhythm that repeats, deepens, and evolves each time you move through it. Different disciplines name them differently, but across psychology, art theory, design, and lived creative practice, the same core pattern appears.

Preparation/Assessment

This is the phase where you gather, observe, and orient. It's the moment of noticing what's alive, sensing what wants to emerge, identifying resources and constraints, and taking stock of your internal and external landscape.

It isn't about action.
It's about awareness—the clear seeing before the movement.

Incubation/Visualization

This is the inner phase—quiet, symbolic, imaginal. It includes forming the internal picture, letting ideas simmer, daydreaming, sketching, imagining, and allowing the subconscious to work.

This is where the creative seed takes shape before it becomes visible.

Illumination/Activation

This is the spark—the moment the idea moves from potential into motion.
It feels like energy rising, clarity clicking, momentum beginning, and the body wanting to move in some way.

This is where creativity becomes kinetic.

Verification/Fortifying

This is the strengthening phase—the one you might be in right now.
It includes refining, building consistency, shaping the work, integrating the creative identity, and sustaining the flow.

It's where creativity becomes structure, not just inspiration.
Fortifying is the muscle-building of creativity.

Expression/Release

Some models include a fifth phase where the work is shared, published, performed, or released into the world. This phase is about letting the work go, allowing it to be witnessed, and completing the cycle.

This is where the creative energy leaves your body and enters the collective field.

Renewal/Rest

After expression, there is a natural downshift. This phase is about rest, integration, recovery, emptiness, and readiness for the next cycle.

This is the fertile void before the next Assessment begins.

Why this matters right now

If you are in Fortifying, this is the phase where the flow becomes stable, the identity becomes real, the practice becomes embodied, and the creativity becomes sustainable. It is the perfect moment for expressing yourself symbolically, for moving in a way that best represents you, and for aligning with your natural expression.

This is fortifying what is already moving you.

Here's the takeaway:

When you are fortifying, you are not forcing anything into being.
You are tending what is already awake.
You are listening to the current that has chosen you, letting it move through your hands, your breath, and your days.

This is the part of the cycle where creativity becomes a companion—not a spark you chase, but a rhythm that rises with you each morning.

Fortifying is the slow, steady weaving of self with expression, the moment when your inner world begins to take shape in the outer one.

It is the quiet architecture of becoming, the strengthening of what is already in motion, and the soft but certain knowing that you are being carried forward by something true.

And when the next cycle begins, you will recognize it—not by its urgency, but by its familiar pull, the way it meets you exactly where you are and invites you to begin again.
